How to practice English shadowing
Start with a short lesson you can already mostly understand. Listen once for meaning, then repeat each sentence aloud while copying the speaker's rhythm, stress, and connected speech — this listen-and-repeat loop is the core of shadowing.
Use dictation when you want to check listening accuracy, and shadowing when you want stronger pronunciation and fluency. Repeating the same lesson over several days builds far more speaking confidence than rushing through many exercises once.
Frequently asked questions
What is English shadowing?
Shadowing is listening to native audio and repeating it aloud almost immediately, copying the speaker's pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation. It trains speaking and listening at the same time.
Is shadowing good for beginners?
Yes. Start with short, slow clips at your level and repeat them many times. Because you speak from the first lesson, shadowing often builds confidence faster than silent study.
How is shadowing different from dictation?
Dictation is listening and writing down what you hear to check accuracy; shadowing is listening and speaking along to build pronunciation and fluency. Using both together covers listening and speaking.
How often should I practise shadowing?
A little every day beats long, rare sessions. Fifteen focused minutes daily, repeating the same clip over several days, builds far more fluency than one long weekly session.
